2019_4_present

On January 18, 2019, our service learning project, Posture Yourself for Good Health, was part of a campus-wide event, Futures Unlimited, to introduce young women to a variety of STEM careers.

The event was made possible by the work of a team of educators and grant funding from the Oakton Education Foundation: Gloria Liu, coordinator, Center for Promoting STEM; Jennifer Strehler, chair, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science; and Melissa Mendoza, PT, DPT, board-certified neurologic clinical specialist and professor in the PTA program.

The day consisted of classes, demonstrations, and panel discussions. The field of physical therapy was presented by our professor, Melissa Mendoza, and students Kim Prestangen and Emma Battaglia. We used APTA's Guide for Professional Conduct and the Code of Ethics as a road map, as this experience was a practice run for clinical in-services and public events we will develop and deliver in our future practice as licensed physical therapist assistants.

Our aim was to engage a specific audience, middle school-aged girls in our college's district.
