Taskforce Recommendations

Screening and Assessment of Cancer-Related Fatigue: A Clinical Practice Guideline for Health Care Providers reports that the EORTC-QLQ-C30 should be used to screen for cancer-related fatigue in individuals living with or beyond a cancer diagnosis.3

Clinical Insights

The fatigue subscale is a quick and effective way to screen patients for cancer-related fatigue, but it should not be used as an independent outcome measure because it only includes the physical aspects of fatigue without considering the emotional and cognitive facets.4,5 A positive response to any of the 3 fatigue-specific questions (Did you need to rest?; Have you felt weak?; Were you tired?) indicates the presence of fatigue and warrants further assessment. Recommended assessment tools include the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-F), Piper Fatigue Scale-Revised, or Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS)-short forms v 1.0 Fatigue.3
