Second-year cohort capstone projects – suggested topics. This list is subject to change.

Awareness and Public Relations

  1. Explore ChoosePT co-branding: develop materials that members can co-brand.
  2. Engage with consumers to get input and pressure test some concepts to expand Find a PT.
  3. Establish an innovation platform or symposium where the most recent advances of the profession can be shared and distributed throughout the profession.

Continuing Education

  1. Revamp and develop CEUs for accreditation self-study and develop program workshops.
  2. Develop a flipped classroom, hybrid on-site reviewer training program in which participants earn CEUs.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Seek ways to join existing community collaborations between health care workers or organizations and local churches that deliver health sessions addressing health disparities in African American communities, and look to incorporate PT services.

Leadership Development

Rebuild a former APTA program designed to help PTs and PTAs successfully gain public office positions within varying levels of U.S. government.

Member Recruitment, Retention, and Engagement

  1. Create a mentoring program for undergraduate and high school students of underrepresented and minority backgrounds to educate and attract students of color into the field of physical therapy.
  2. Outline a plan for APTA and components to have "shared" recruitment and retention efforts. The plan would keep members and potential members from getting millions of emails but allow both APTA national and components to deliver their value propositions in an aligned way to grow membership.
  3. Develop or strengthen value propositions for each of APTA's membership personas (student, PT, PTA, early-career, mid-career, late-career, different practice settings, etc.).

Practice

Develop productivity standards for physical therapy (federal regulatory and practice).

Volunteer Leadership

Identify suggested micro volunteering opportunities for components to post on APTA Engage. These opportunities should be quick tasks or activities that allow people to volunteer without a big-time commitment. This project should include developing detailed templates with a description for each opportunity and include guidance for implementation of the volunteer opportunity at the component level.

Research

  1. Develop and test a training program for members to critically appraise literature for systematic reviews.
  2. Conduct research on APTA component governance structures through a comprehensive review of component bylaws. This could include board and executive committee structure and terms, selection process for delegates, identification of standing committees and special interest groups, etc.
  3. Assist with examining the criteria being used for systematic reviews.
  4. Assist with identifying and looking more closely at which articles are getting the most attention from readers and those most cited.
  5. Assist with conducting an environmental scan of research priorities developed by other physical therapy and rehab-related organizations within the last five years.

Website

Create a web area on apta.org dedicated to giving prospective students practical information about what to expect in terms of the costs of their PT or PTA education, how to manage student debt, what to look for in a school when applying, how to compare all costs among programs (not just tuition), and ways to reduce costs (including choosing less-expensive programs, etc.).
